What is mental health?
WHO defines Mental Health as a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community. It involves how individuals think, feel, and behave in response to the various stressors and challenges they encounter in life.
Mental health is not merely the absence of mental illness but also the presence of positive attributes such as resilience, self-esteem, and the ability to form and maintain healthy relationships.
Mental health conditions include mental disorders and psychosocial disabilities as well as other mental states associated with significant distress, impairment in functioning, or risk of self-harm.
What causes mental health disorders?
There is no single cause for mental illness. A number of factors can contribute to risk for mental illness, such as
- Genetic factors: Individuals with a family history of mental illness may be at a higher risk of developing similar conditions due to shared genetic predispositions.
- Environmental Factors: Environmental stressors and traumatic experiences, such as childhood abuse, neglect, violence, or significant life events (e.g., loss of a loved one, divorce, job loss), can increase the risk of developing mental health disorders.
- Biological Factors: Imbalances in brain chemistry, neurotransmitter dysfunction, hormonal imbalances, and structural abnormalities in the brain can contribute to the development of mental health disorders. These biological factors can affect mood regulation, cognition, and behavior.
- Psychological Factors: Personality traits, coping styles, and thought patterns can influence susceptibility to mental health disorders.
- Social Factors: Social determinants of health, such as socioeconomic status, access to healthcare, social support networks, and discrimination, can impact mental health outcomes
- Substance Abuse: Substance abuse and addiction can significantly impact mental health and increase the risk of developing co-occurring mental health disorders. Substance use can exacerbate existing mental health symptoms or trigger the onset of new psychiatric conditions.
- Experiences related to other ongoing (chronic) medical conditions, such as cancer or diabetes
